Productive Networking

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Social events, seminars, workshops, breakfasts, lunches, meetings over coffee, after-hours events – the list goes on. With the number of opportunities to network in any given week, you could spend two thirds of your available working time just meeting with people!

However, networking is usually only a piece of your overall marketing plan, so how do you make certain your networking hours are well spent?

Get realistic about how much time an event will take.

  • Where is the meeting or event and at what time of day??
  • Will your trip there or back be during rush hour??
  • Do you need to get there early or stay late to be around when the networking really happens?

Here’s a hypothetical but very realistic situation. You’ve decided to attend a networking luncheon that also features a guest speaker. It will take you 20 minutes to get from your office to the event where you’ll spend just over two hours including the time you’ve built in for pre- and post-event networking. Then another 20 minutes back to your office. In total, this event took about three hours out of your day and only a small portion of that time was free for networking.

Do you have that kind of time to waste? Probably not. Productive networking is planned networking. Whether you will have 10 minutes or two hours to mingle, make the time count.

Before you go, do your homework, know what you want to achieve, and have a plan.

  • The motto of successful networkers is “givers get”. Be prepared to listen and see what you can do for people you connect with. Hogging the conversation is worse than not networking at all because then rather than having no impression about you they have a bad impression about you.
  • If you are having a one-on-one meeting to network, allot a certain amount of time and stick to it. At the beginning of the meeting let the other person know how much time you have set aside. Have a clear idea of what you want to take away from that meeting.
  • For a large gathering plan your elevator speech well ahead of time. Nothing is more tedious than someone who needs 10 minutes to explain what they do. Get it down to a minute or less and focus on what results you help your clients achieve. If the listener is interested, they’ll ask for more information.
  • Is it more important for you to hand out all of your business cards or make a solid connection with one or two people? Usually quality, not quantity, is preferable.

Networking is an important marketing tool for any size business and being a productive networker can make a significant impact in your bottom line results.

Nova Scotia’s Lighthouse Route

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Nova Scotia is Canada’s Atlantic province with a long history of seafaring and fishing. Its coastline is often rocky and treacherous for all boats that venture too close, or are lost in the fog banks. Lighthouses were built over the years and the Lighthouse Route is a tour from Yarmouth to Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore. There are over twenty lighthouses on the Lighthouse Route following Hwy 3 for over 570 kms.

The Lighthouse Route begins, appropriately, at one of Nova Scotia’s most dramatic and historically significant lighthouses. The Yarmouth Light stands on the rocky point of Cape Forchu, named by Samuel de Champlain in 1604. The original lighthouse, built in 1839, was replaced by the current structure in the 1960s. Rising 23 meters above the ground, the lighthouse’s two-million-candlepower beam can be seen over 30 nautical miles out at sea. The town of Yarmouth is an historic seaport whose proximity to New England and rich offshore fishing grounds contributed to the town’s development and prosperity.

The Lighthouse Route leaves Yarmouth on Route 3 and after passing Roberts Island and Glenwood Provincial Park, the side road on Route 335 leads to the French-speaking communities of West Pubnico, Middle West Pubnico and Lower West Pubnico. Settled in 1653 by Acadians, these villages make up the oldest Acadian settlement in the province. In Middle West Pubnico, a monument displays millstones used here in 1699. Also in West Pubnico, the Abbott’s Harbour Lighthouse offers a pleasant place for a picnic. The many islands in the area can be explored by sea kayak.

Many of the small towns and villages along this coastline, like Wedgeport, West Pubnico and Woods Harbour, depend on the sea for their livelihood. Colourful fleets of longliners, trawlers and scallop draggers work the offshore fishing grounds, while smaller craft like lobster boats harvest the inshore areas. At Woods Harbour the lighthouse, built in 1900, sits on a rock ledge in the harbour.

In Shag Harbour you can climb the tower in the Chapel Hill Museum for a panoramic view of the sea and outlying islands. At night the lights of several lighthouses- at Cape Sable, Bon Portage Island, Seal Island and Woods Harbour-are visible from this point. The rocks around Seal Island, called the Sea Wolves by Champlain, wrecked hundreds of ships before the building of the first lighthouse in 1830.

The Lighthouse Route continues to the busy service centre of Barrington Passage, where it turns right on Route 330 to Cape Sable Island, a noted birding destination. Cape Sable Island offers an excellent view of the stately Cape Sable Light, the tallest in Nova Scotia. Just beyond Barrington Passage is Barrington, an attractive village with several historic attractions. The replica of the Seal Island Light was built in 1979 as a lighthouse museum. Enjoy the panoramic view of Barrington Bay from the top. The massive Fresnel lens is the one that warned vessels away from the Seal Island shore.

At Port La Tour, a right turn off the Lighthouse Route leads to Smithville and Baccaro, where the Baccaro Lighthouse offers a terrific vantage point for watching seabirds. This loop road rejoins the Lighthouse Route near Shelburne but first it turns right at Port Clyde and follows the coast to Birchtown. About a thousand Blacks who came to Shelburne with the Loyalist migration in 1783 first settled the village of Birchtown. At the time, this was the largest free Black settlement in North America. The village was named in honour of General Birch, the New York commandant who gave protection to Black Loyalists who supported the British during the Revolutionary War.

The next stop is Shelburne, a town whose rich history and picturesque charm has captured the hearts of many and attracted the attention of the film industry. Shelburne was settled in 1783 when 3,000 United Empire Loyalists, who had maintained allegiance to the British Crown during the American Revolution, arrived by ship from New York City, creating an instant boomtown in the wilderness.

The Lighthouse Route continues along the shore, reaching historic Liverpool, “Port of the Privateers”, the privateering capital of North America between 1760 and 1812. South of Liverpool is the scenic Western Head/Mersey Point Loop which brings you to the Western Head Lighthouse, where surfers, a variety of sea birds and harbour seals are often seen, along with a view of Coffin Island Lighthouse in Liverpool Bay. 208 From Liverpool, the Lighthouse Route continues to Brooklyn, birthplace of the former country music star Hank Snow. Now the Route follows a scenic coastal loop to Beach Meadows, where Beach Meadows Park features a white sand beach and more striking views of the Coffin Island Lighthouse. In Port Medway, the attractions include the Port Medway Lighthouse Park and the Medway Head Lighthouse.

Turn right at Crescent Beach and follow the sign to LaHave Islands. Before you enter LaHave, turn right to go to the Fort Point Museum, a former lighthouse-keeper’s house and site of the Fort Sainte-Marie-de-Grce National Historic Site, where Isaac de Razilly, the first governor of New France, landed with his settlers in 1632.

The Lighthouse Route continues along the picturesque coastline through the villages of Bayport and First South, turning right on Route 3 to enter Lunenburg, one of Nova Scotia’s most historic and beautiful towns. Lunenburg’s colourful waterfront, narrow streets and captivating architecture radiate the flavour of the town’s seafaring heritage. At the turn of the century Lunenburg’s schooner fleet sailed the Grand Banks, competing with the fleets of New England to bring home the abundance of cod.

From Lunenburg, Route 324 heads inland through rolling farmland and forests, with many beautiful lakes. The winery in Newburne offers tours and tastings; you can also pick berries when in season. The Route continues through Martin’s River to Western Shore, where an attractive shoreline park offers superb views of the bay and its islands. Nearby is Oak Island, where a mysterious system of tunnels and shafts originally discovered on the island in 1795 has inspired two centuries of treasure hunters, including American President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Currently, the island is not open to the public.

The Lighthouse Route passes through many more small towns before it turns across the rocky headland toward the timeless magic of Peggy’s Cove. The graceful lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove sits high upon the smooth wave-worn granite of the coast and is a revered symbol of the seaborn spirit of Nova Scotia. The tiny harbour below the lighthouse is a masterpiece of seasoned fish sheds and colourful fishing boats, making it one of the most photographed places in Canada. The lighthouse now does duty as Canada’s only post office in a lighthouse. It even has its own special stamp cancellation, an image of the lighthouse. The smooth rocks of the shore here are great for exploring, but visitors are cautioned to stay well back from the water’s edge-large waves can strike the shore without warning, especially in rough weather.

From Peggy’s Cove the Lighthouse Route proceeds along the heavily wooded coast to Bayside and Shad Bay. At Bayside, visiting golfers are welcome to enjoy the challenge and excitement of a championship golf course overlooking the beautiful waters of Shad Bay. The rugged shoreline begins to slip away as the Lighthouse Route ends and the exciting blend of living history and cosmopolitan bustle that is Greater Halifax begins.

Review of the Samsung J700

Monday, July 7th, 2008

The Samsung J700 has proven amazingly popular with the public making it a winner for Samsung As a entry level mobile phone the J700 is quite well featured compared to some other models within this price bracket. The overall design of this mobile phone is not as good as we have come to expect from Samsung.

The ring-tones enabled on the J700 are Polyphonic, MP3 as well as a vibrating alert . This mobile phone is bluetooth enabled making compatibility with the vast majority of contemporary mobile accessories very easy. The Samsung J700 is that comes with a Standard battery, Li-Ion battery cell. If colour is something you are interested in you may like to know that the J700 only comes in Black. Weighing in at 92 g, this phone is pretty light. This phone is small and comfortable to carry. The J700 has support for 2G GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 . A 1.3 MP, 1280×960 pixels, video is integrated into this mobile handset camera. For mobile Internet users as WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML browser is included. Getting on to the display the phone is equipped with a 2 inch screen, which, considering the other options available for this kind of money is a bit disappointing. The screen is a TFT, 65K colors. This mobile phone has a number of extras such as:

  • MPEG4/3GP video player/recorder
  • Voice memo
  • MP3/AAC/AAC+/MIDI player
  • Currency converter
  • BT printing
  • Organizer
  • Java MIDP 2.0
  • FM radio
  • In spite of being one of the most recent models on the market, it remains possible to find some fantastic deals on the J700.

Due to the number of online stores that have opened it has never been simpler or more cost effective to buy a mobile phone. To find the best price on a Samsung J700 use a site that allows you to compare mobile phones to compare mobile phones .

Navigating the Maze of Industrial Furniture

    Monday, July 7th, 2008

When you’re new to the responsibility of buying industrial furniture – whether you need a portable stage, drafting table, modular desks, school furniture, or office partitions – it’s difficult to quickly get a grasp of the range of products available, and even harder to determine which products will work best for your needs. Here’s a quick rundown to get you started:

Portable Stage: Portable stages come in a variety of heights, typically 8 inches, 16 inches, 24 inches, 32 inches, and 40 inches. They are also available in different widths and lengths, the most common being 3 feet by 6 feet, 3 feet by 8 feet, 4 feet by 6 feet, and 4 feet by 8 feet. The top of a portable stage is called a deck, and can be made from hardboard or polypropylene. Polypropylene decks can be carpeted to enhance their appearance.

Portable stages give you a wide variety of options. You can, for example, buy several platforms of the same height to form a flat performance stage. Or, you can buy several different heights to construct band or choral risers. When buying a portable stage, look for those that assemble quickly and that take up little room when folded and stacked. Finally, keep in mind that for safety reasons, guardrails should be used on the sides and rear of stages.

School Furniture: When selecting school furniture, the two realities are that kids grow and that they are hard on furniture. By all means, select desks that are height-adjustable and that have laminate surfaces that are easy to clean and hard to damage.

School desks are typically available with two types of openings: the lift-lid kind and the open-front type. If you select desks with lift-lid openings, be sure that they have sturdy steel hinges and dual closing devices for durability and quietness.

School chairs are usually available in four heights: 12 inches, 14 inches, 16 inches, and 18 inches. The chair legs are either tubular (for linoleum or other hard floor surfaces) or what’s called a sled base (for carpeted surfaces). Stackable chairs usually work best for school settings, since they’re easy to store and simple to move for cleaning.

Drafting Table: The most crucial element of a drafting table is height adjustability. The proper height is important to prevent back strain and injuries. The top of the drafting table should have a non-glare finish and a top angle adjustment of up to 50 degrees. In addition, a drafting table should include a tool drawer and a reference drawer.

Office Partitions: There are many different types of office partitions from which to choose. Look for those that feature panels with adjustable glides and quick connectors to combine two or more panels. Keep in mind that office spaces change, so the office partitions you choose should allow for flexibility.

“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true.”
    [By Richard Bach]

This is so true… but it fails to say that sometimes to attain that wish or dream, the path can be hard and rocky and sometimes unfair. Sometimes the stones in the path may slow you down. The virtue of patience may have to be learned but don’t ever give up! Go after it. Fight your way past the stones. When you find it unfair, remember that you are not alone, others have run into the same unfairness, then persevered and overcame it.

Your life is ahead of you and with many decisions and choices to make, all of which will decide what path your life will take, what will happen and how lives around you will be affected.

Just because you are young or starting over doesn’t mean that you can’t think, plan and aim your life in the best direction. If you can see it in your mind, you can use that mind to make the decisions to make it happen. If you need help don’t be too proud to reach out for it from someone that is wiser and able.

    Sisters Everywhere

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

Many things may try to bring you down.

If you’re poor, sometimes the keys are hard to find,

    seek them, look around.

If you’re rich, sometimes you aren’t aware,

    the keys are even there.

Look around at the ones that don’t have, and compare.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

Rich or poor your family and friends

may not encourage, understand, or be fair,

    they may even abuse.

There are others out there that want what’s best for you,

and they are there for you to use.

No one has to endure abuse. Not in America,

    Not now, Not ever!

    No one has to lose.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

Even if your life right now is good,

be careful of what some call fun.

    Think things through,

your choices will make things happen,

    and lives will be effected.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

    Stay in school!

    If you’ve quit, go back!

    Grit your teeth, study, succeed,

    plan your attack.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

If or rather when you find a guy,

and he ever pushes or shoves or hits,

or tells you that you can’t,

    take my word on it,

it will only get worse with time.

    They won’t quit.

If you were to pledge your love,

    marry and have kids,

    given time,

it may be their turn to feel the push and shove.

If you stayed it wouldn’t change

    and lives would be effected.

Then if the time came that you did leave,

well, then too lives would be affected.

So when you meet those guys,

only accept the kind, gentle, strong and fair.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

    Find the true people,

not the ones who decide if you’re a friend

by the clothes on your back or the money in your pocket.

    It’s plain and simple!

If people don’t care for you, as you are, Say Hey,

they were not your friends anyway.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

For every choice there is a price.

    Be yourself,

    but expect of yourself

what you would like to have in others!

    Remember to be considerate

of you’re real friends and family.

They will be the ones there for you.

    Use that Great Mind!

    Don’t blame the World.

    Open up your eyes.

    Start the cycle’s right!

    Know that you have worth!

Oh yes, for every choice there is a price.

Point 1 – Red Sox Win! Red Sox Win!

There will NOT be a bigger sporting event this year than the saga that was the 200 ALCS between the little Red Sox team defeating the big bad Yankees. The stories involve Pedro Martinez calling the whole damn Yankees as his “Daddy”, to Mariano Rivera coming back to pitch in game 4 after 2 “shocking” deaths in his wife’s family. From Schilling making baseball a MAN’S sport by pitching off a bleeding ankle, to the Red Sox making HISTORY with the 1st EVER come from behind 0 games to 3 to win the best of 7 game series. If it took a home run race between McGuire and Sosa to break the all-time record to bring life back to baseball, the 2004 ALCS will be known for bringing excitement back to a nation that was in dire need of a diversion from 9/11, Presidential debates, and war. Although this battle was a far cry from a David vs. Goliath, people still tried to make it seem as though it was. New York had history, tradition, and the Curse of the Bambino on their side, not to mention a 182 MILLION dollar payroll (that’s in 1 baseball season folks!). The little old Red Sox had only 125 Million dollar payroll (number 2 after the Yankees, and another 24 million ahead of the number 3 Angels), an almost 9 decade drought, and that big curse against them. It will be interesting to now see what comparisons are drawn to a Cardinal team that is near the middle of the pack (11th overall) with a whopping 50 million dollars less than the Red Sox. I think this one will be over when the fat lady sings, as the Sox will be the Fat Lady making fried chicken out of the Cardinals.

Point 2 – Big Cecil, Big Debts

Detroit loved Cecil Fielder, who made over 47 million dollars during his career as a major leaguer. Cecil “Big Daddy” Fielder was one of the first in the modern day era to bring Home Run hitting over the 50 mark in 1990, something that had not been done in the American League for almost 30 years. 13 seasons, 319 Home Runs, 1 World Series ring, and 47 million dollars later, Big Daddy is in hiding over debts owed to various groups or people. For the average man, it is unfathomable that someone who can own a 50 bedroom house, purchased for only 3.7 million (less than 10% of his career earnings), can now be over 9 million dollars in debt…and in hiding. With Cecil in the midst of a divorce, we can only hope that Cecil gets the help he needs, declares bankruptcy, and moves on. The life of luxury may be over for him, but that does not mean he needs to ruin the rest of it.

Point 3 – Hockey has now become a game of Chicken

Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow are playing the most expensive game of chicken profesionnal sports has ever seen. Bettman is out to break the union, and Goodenow will not go back to the table, if the offer resembles anything like the latest proposal put forth by the owners. The problem for Goodenow right now is that his players are starting to talk. While some players are making fairly controversial statements (look up Chelios on this lock-out), players for the most part, just want at least the semblance of an effort made by their player association. To the majority of the players making the league average or less, the only thing they see out of this waiting game is diminishing support capacity for their current lifestyle. Sure, over 200 players have gone to Europe, but that also in not a real option for a lot of players, that have family commitments or other that keep them in North America. They are beginning to realize that in the end, the outcome of these negotiations will not favor them. Both the owners and union admit that salaries will decrease in the next collective bargaining agreement. So why should they have to get NO money, when at least SOME money can go to paying their mortgage? A Union is supposed to represent the best interests of all its players. Sure, the owners did cause this problem. It is not a player’s fault if he accepts a 10 million dollar a year deal. Would YOU turn down that kind of money? I think not.a

Your Beginners Guide Formula One Racing Courses

    Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

An ordinary Formula 1 race circuit typically consists of an extended piece of straight tarmac on which the starting marks are positioned. The pit lane, where the Formula One drivers pull in for fuel & tyres during the F1 race, & where the F1 constructors work on the Formula One cars previous to the Formula One race, is traditionally located next to the starting grid. The plan of the remaining parts of the track differs significantly, even if in many examples the course is laid in a clockwise direction. Those couple of race circuits that go anticlockwise (and consequently have mainly left-handed corners) may cause Formula One drivers health issues because of the enormous amount of lateral forces generated by Formula One machines dragging their body in the reverse direction to normal.

Most of the race tracks currently in use are specially constructed for competition. The modern street tracks are the Circuit of Monaco and Melbourne, although street races in other urban locations come and go (E.g. Las Vegas and Detroit) and plans for such circuits are regularly discussed ? most recently London & Beirut. Quite a few other race circuits are also totally or partly laid out on normal public roads, for example Spa-Francorchamps. The beauty and love of the Monaco F1 grand prix are the most important explanations why the race track is still in use, since it’s believed not to pass the stringent safety rules obligatory on other tracks. Three-time F1 World champion Nelson Piquet famously expressed driving in Monte Carlo as “like riding a bike around your living room”.
