Winter Holidays for the Carbon Minded Snowboarder

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Hundreds of avid snowboarders will before long be searching for their ski trousers and shooting away looking for the biggest snow conditions.

And without doubt the impact of our carbon footprint will be roughly as far down the list of vacation essentials as a turkey sandwich after the Christmas vacation.

Only last year, a tardy snow made the the newspaper headlines and holidaymakers panicked about the flecks of snow melting almost as soon as they put down.

Ski holiday organisation Chalet1802, based at the bottom of Mount Blanc in Chamonix Mont Blanc France in the Alps, is one of the only autonomous firms to go carbon negative and give skiers an environmentally friendly choice whilst reserving their ski trip.

Chalet1802 proprietor Leonela stated: Last year was a bit of a surprise with the most warm wintertime in fifty five years in the French Alps. Snowboarding ski areas like La Chavanette, Brevent and La Mongie lacked clients. It was balmy and the snowfall did not last so much of the early skiing season in the Alps was uneven. We determined to go carbon negative to help preserve the skiing resort.

Leonela said: We’re not seeking to dictate to holiday makers only we feel it’s all important to provide them the alternative without augmenting the price of the skiing holiday. If they book with us and takes his annual leave in our Chamonix chalet they can more than off set their carbon output and we take in the extra prices. Of course we still have a sauna and a hot tub – customers want luxury but not at the expense of the surroundings, so we looked at ways of reducing the impact of a guest flying over here for a winter holiday.”

Natural Soap Making and Ingredients in Soaps

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

What is in your soap?

Active soap ingredients have always been on the forefront of all beauty, bath and germicidal soaps alike but do you know which substances make up most of the ingredients in your regular soaps? Let’s take a look.

Among the most common soap-producing plants are the following:

Soap Plant (Chlorogalum pomeridianum)
Soapbark (Quillaja saponaria)

Soapberry (Sapindus mukorossi)
Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis)

Roots are the primary source of saponins in most plants while others locate abundance of the same ingredient on the bark. Manual extraction procedure with water produces lather required for an immediate shampoo and body-cleaning needs.

It is obvious that people of the past have managed to use such ingredients in their purest form until they have discovered that other earth and animal-derived material can be used to enhance the efficiency and usability of such products.

Development of Soap Making

Our ancestors have seen the benefits of adding or enhancing the ingredients which makes up the soap they use. It was by accident which they realized that mixing saponin-containing substances with ashes or charcoal derived substances produces a more refined saponified substances as sodium stereate and in some cases, potassium stereate.

In addition, they have found out that the addition of rendered animal and plant fats with the then popular soldium hydroxide solution (which they have known then as an element and not a solution), produces a solidified version of soaps.

Plants are an abundant and popular known source of soap oils – olive oil, coconut oil, canola oil, tallow, palm, olive oil, soybean oil among others .

Modern Soap Ingredients

The introduction of soap technology and as people rallying on to reducing the manufacturing cost of soap production, fat oils such as rendered pork fat or beef fat, derived from animals have overtaken the use the use plant oils plant-derived saponin sources.

But the inclusion of several ingredients in soaps is generally not advantageous for it proved to be irritating to most skin types. Soaps derived from animal fats are no more than different so synthetic materials which makes skin more prone to itching and bacterial attacks.

Plant Oils and Animal Fats

Plant oils used for making soaps are considerably milder and the skin soft. It leaves little residue which usually is dissolved by washing. Moreover, the addition of scents such as perfume adds to the irritating properties of some soap products.

This residue takes in the form of sodium hydroxide, a popular caustic base agent in soap, rayon and papermaking.

Fats and oils derived from plants and animals are good enough to use as soap themselves but they lack the necessary caustic agent for them to produce the lathering effect as seen when using regular bath soaps.

Soap-Making

Lye (sodium hydroxide), is used in the entire saponification process. As treated fats and oils are mixed with lye, it begins to react and form begin the process described above. This process brings about the characteristic thickening and hardening of the liquids and begins assuming a different phase – thickened soft solid mass.
This process is repeated until all lye has reacted with oil so that molding and packing goes next.

Active Ingredients – What does this mean?

Active ingredients are one among the most controversial substances ever to put in a bar soap. Active ingredients determine the applicable usage of a certain soap to a person’s body and skin types.

For example, anti-bacterial soaps have triclosan and triclocarban as its active agent which inhibits the growth of specific type of bacteria (gram-positive).

In the same manner as BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) anti-oxidants and PEG-6 methyl ether sometimes found in detergents and added to soaps sometimes do more harm than good so it is best to check out for some of these substances.

You can find soaps made without petroleum or animal products
if you have sensitive skin, allergies or are interested in
natural products that are environmentally friendly.

The Story Of A King And Three Maidens – Six Keys To A Successful Relationship

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

A King was trying to choose between three maidens to be his wife and queen. It was very difficult to judge since these women were all very intelligent and beautiful. He gave each maiden a bag of seeds and told them he was going on a pilgrimage for one year. When he returned, each of them were to give the seeds back to him. Whoever protected the seeds the best would become his wife.

The first maiden locked them in a safe to protect them. The second maiden sold the seeds at the market, thinking she would purchase new seeds when the king returned. The third maiden threw the seeds in the garden. When the king returned, the first maiden pulled the seeds from the safe where they had died due to lack of light, water, and air. The second maiden rushed to the market, purchased new seeds, and presented them to the king. The King said that although the seeds were alive, they were not the same seeds. The third maiden brought him into the garden where there were many flowers blooming. She told the King that the flowers were from the seeds he had given her. The king said to the third maiden that she would be his wife because she understood that a seed, like love, should be treated with care, tended with kindness and allowed room to grow for it to become strong and beautiful.

Relationships, like seeds need the proper environment to grow. The environment needs a balance of the five elements. The seed will die if there is too much or too little water, air, light, or earth. Just as a seed needs this balance in life to flourish, we also need proper balance in our homes to create, maintain, and nurture our relationships.

SIX KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP

1. Clear the energy in your home regularly as a build up of stress and resistance will only inhibit relationships. You can purchase a Vastu CD from Vastu Creations by emailing us at info@vastucreations.com. When played regularly, this CD will eliminate negative energy in the environment and will benefit all of your relationships.

2. Remove clutter from all areas of your home especially the center, northeast, and northwest. Clutter causes stagnation in relationships.

3. Balance the five elements in your home to create a healthy environment so relationships will grow. Get a Vastu Home Analysis. It’s easy to do, easier to implement and will benefit your life immensely. See the Vastu Creations website at www.vastucreations.com for more information and to order.

4. Sleep in the southwest area of your home with your head to the south. Your body is a magnet with your head being the positive polarity. When you sleep with your head to the north, the two positive polarities repel each other and can create disharmony in the body. Sleeping with your head to the south replenishes your energy and helps to remove stress.

5. Create a Relationship Altar to positively stimulate new and existing relationships. You can purchase individual instructions for this altar by going to the Products Page on our website at www.vastucreations.com/ or pre-order our upcoming book Altars of Power and Grace and get free shipping within the continental United States.

6. You are connected to everyone in the world and everything in the Universe. See all people as God. Treat others as you wish to be treated by giving them respect and honoring who they are.

Michael and Robin Mastro’s synergistic approach successfully assists people in living in peace and harmony with themselves and others, and in creating balanced lives filled with unlimited possibilities. Visit us at www.VastuCreations.com

Healing Your Body

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Are you ready to be healthy and full of vibrant energy? Would you like some ideas about how to heal your body?

During many years as a psychotherapist, I discovered fascinating insights into the emotional causes of disease and accidents. I have also developed powerful processes that have helped people heal themselves and maintain their health and safety.

For example, Sunny, a young man in his early twenties, was diabetic from the time he was twelve years old. When he came to see me he was almost daily going into diabetic shock. I have a favorite saying, “Close your eyes and see clearly.” So I said, “Sunny, close your eyes and imagine that you are really small and traveling inside your body to the place where you store all your tension.” It was no surprise to either one of us when Sunny ended up in front of his pancreas. He said, “My God, what a mess. There’s a lot of junk in there.”

In the course of his counseling sessions, Sunny became aware of and overcame all the negative emotional issues that were “stored” in his pancreas. By the eighth and final session, Sunny reported that he was feeling great and his pancreas looked very healthy. He said, “It’s amazing, Helene, I’m taking less than one-half of the amount of insulin I needed when I first came to see you. I realize that I almost killed myself by way of diabetic shock because I couldn’t cope with all the emotional pain with my family and a broken relationship.”

Another example of the connection between the mind, the emotions, and the body is thirty-five-year-old Cindy. She had no relief from her constant vaginal yeast infections no matter how much she treated the condition with the medication from her doctor. In her counseling process, Cindy found out that her yeast infections were actually serving her by preventing her from being sexual. When confronted with the idea, Cindy admitted to herself that she was afraid to be in another sexual relationship because she always got too emotionally involved, and then felt deeply hurt if it ended. Cindy’s infection cleared up when she trusted herself to avoid another relationship until she was confident that she would not be devastated if it did not last.

Tom, a forty-three-year-old businessman, finally came into the office when his wife threatened to leave him. However, he was still resistant and insisted that he was fine, he had no problems. Meeting him on his level and at his comfort zone, I said, “Tom, let’s be logical. You are telling me that your childhood was fine, and that you have no issues to resolve. The reality is that you are struggling with your career, having serious problems with your wife and daughters, and you have been warned about the beginnings of heart problems.”

“Let’s take the analogy of an automobile. If your car isn’t running properly do you believe that nothing is wrong or do you open up the hood and fix it? Obviously, Tom, your life is not running well, which means you have to deal with the issues in your unconscious that are causing you problems. In a sense you need to pick up your hood.”

Tom realized that I had a point. He finally loosened his tie, and was willing to regress back to his childhood. To his surprise, he uncovered an incredible amount of pain. Tom had succeeded in blocking his painful childhood; but because of his denial, he was heading for disaster. It was amazing to see this logical, machine-like person transform into a feeling human being as he expressed his fears, his deep hurts, shame, anger, and grief. As a result, Tom began to feel so good about himself that he began to watch his diet, exercise more and improve his relationships with his family. I will never forget when he happily told me about the wonderful report he had received from his doctor.

The case of Sarah is another example of how important it is to listen to your body and constructively express your feelings. Sarah, a forty-seven-year-old woman, was suffering from recurring cancer. Previously, the doctors had succeeded in removing a malignant tumor from her throat and Sarah seemed to be doing well. However, six months ago they discovered a growth in her back.

During the first counseling session, Sarah was able to express her anger, shame, and fearssomething she never did. She was a people pleaser, someone who always had a smile on her face. Sarah always tried to make everyone happy, even if she hurt herself in the process. When Sarah returned the following week, she told me that she was able to cut her pain medication in half. After another session, in which she released intensive emotional pain, she was totally free of physical pain.

Needless to say, Sarah was very optimistic about her recovery. However, Sarah called me one day very upset. She was feeling pain in her throat where the first tumor was removed. I reassured her that the doctors succeeded in removing the growth, the symptom, but the emotional cause was still not resolved. In the next session, after Sarah released her issues about being afraid to speak up, about communicating how she really felt, the pain in her throat disappeared.

I have noticed that certain emotions will be blocked in specific areas of the body. For example, clients often realize that they are angry when they have upper or lower back pain, headaches, tightness in the base of the skull, or jaw pain. I often find fear blocked in the abdominal areas, sadness stuffed in the sinuses, or the sides of the back of the neck. The feeling of responsibility causes tension in the shoulders. Hurt and deep sadness often explains the tightness in the center of the chest or in the heart.

I have also found the body to be very literal. Some examples are: tension in the throat deals with the fear of speaking; problems in the eyes relate to not wanting to see something; hearing problems often correspond to the desire not to hear.

It may be hard to believe, but I have discovered that our unresolved emotions can also cause our accidents. In fact, every time a client had an injury, they were always able to uncover the reason it happened. For example, Tonya, a very attractive twenty-one-year-old, had a scar on her forehead from a serious car accident.

I said, “Tonya, imagine that you are up in the sky and looking down at the collision. Now tell the Tonya in the car why she had that accident.” She replied, “Tonya, you had that accident because you felt guilty about having so much more than your family members and your friends. You are prettier, smarter, and more successful, and you don’t appreciate all that you have.”

We are all very powerful beings. We have the ability to create our illness or accidents as well as our health and safety. In order to be healthy and full of vibrant energy, we need to understand that our physical bodies are expressing our thoughts and feelings. When we listen to what our bodies are telling us, when we constructively express our emotions and resolve our issues, we can take an active part in healing ourselves and experience optimum safety, health, and happiness.

Treating Arthritis – Naturally

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

There are actually three common types of arthritis. These are Osteoarthritis which is the most common, affecting around 16 million Americans with an average age of 45. It usually will attack weight bearing joints like knees, hips, and ankles but has been found in the fingers, neck and spine. Each of our joints is cushioned by cartilage, a very dense, sponge-like substance. Osteoarthritis attacks that cartilage and gradually wears it down.

Another type of arthritis is Rheumatoid Arthritis. Extremely painful and inflammatory, it strikes the lining of the joints and actually attacks two million Americans in their twenties.

Psoriatic Arthritis is not as well known as the previous two, but actually eats away at the joints and can also manifest as psoriasis on the skin.

The term Arthritis literally translates to “joint inflammation.” If you suffer from any of the different types of Arthritis listed above, chances are you have taken drugs to combat the effects or tried other “home remedies.” If you haven’t yet tried “Urtication,” it might be helpful. The term “Urtication” comes from the botanical name, Urtica dioica and dates back some 2,000 years to biblical times. Urtica dioica is “Stinging Nettle. The treatment is to grasp the nettles in a gloved hand and swat the sore joints with the nettles. This may seem bizarre, but the practice has proven to be so effective for some sufferers of arthritis that they now maintain a nettle plant on their window sill.

Here are a few more herbs that are used effectively for the treatment of arthritis:

Black Cohosh

Also known as Black Snakeroot, Bugbane, Rattleroot, Rattleweed, Squawroot. The dried root is the part used. This is a powerful relaxant as well as being extremely effective with easing painful menstrual cramps. Ovarian cramps will be relieved as well as bringing on a delayed menstrual cycle. It is also effective in the treatment of arthritis, osteo-arthritis, rheumatic pain and neurological pan. In small doses, appetite and digestion are greatly improved and is very beneficial for the nervous system in general.

Bogbean

Useful for treatment of rheumatism, osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Also has a stimulating effect on the walls of the colon and digestive juices.

Celery Seeds

Use dried ripe fruits to use as an anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, diuretic or anti-spasmodic. Great for treating rheumatism, arthritis and gout.

Chapparal

Very useful in cases of acne, arthritis, chronic backache, skin conditions of warts and blotches. Also one of the best cancer herbs.

Feverfew

Use the leaves to treat migraine headaches, arthritis, dizziness and tinnitus.

Nettle

The is the herb we referred to earlier and is another one of those “universal” plants. They are found all over the world and they strengthen the entire body. Rheumatism, arthritis, eczema, nosebleeds, arteries, lessen blood pressure are just a few applications. Nettles contain calcium, chlorine, iron, potassium, silicon, sodium and sulphur.

Saffron

A natural hydrochloric acid (utilizes sugar of fruits and oils), thus helping arthritics get rid of the uric acid which holds the calcium deposited in the joints. Also reduces lactic acid build up. Good for measles, skin, scarlet fever and perspiration.

Yucca

Hope for arthritics. The extract from the plant has been used with surprising success on arthritis and rheumatism sufferers.

All of the herbs mentioned here should be available at your local health food store along with suggestions on how to prepare them for use. Some applications will be to ingest in teas while others may facilitate creating a topical treatment.

No matter what natural remedies you choose please consult your physician to make certain that your course of treatment does not interfere with medications that your doctor subscribes for your treatment.

Be in the Moment!

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Lately I’ve noticed myself so consumed by the daily tasks of being a mom, running a business, taking care of the home, organizing meals, etc…that I’ve lost touch with the here and now. I’ve realized at times when I am with my amazing children, blowing bubbles on a beautiful fall day, that I am also planning out the many other things I have on my to-do list. By the time I’ve realized this, I’ve lost the moment. Time goes by so quickly, and in a flash the many moments that make up “life” are gone. There will always be work to do, always chores to finish, deadlines and responsibilities to live up to. However, moments with your children, friends or family will have a much more lasting impression on everyone if you are fully present. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, so be conscious of the moment you are in, breath it in and savor the experience for what it is.

ACTION TIPS FOR THE WEEK:

1. Out of sight-out of mind

This week try to be aware of the moment for what it is. Keep work at work, and when you are home, really enjoy the time with your loved ones. Play just for the sake of playing. Realize that your work will get done when you designate time for work, at the office. Schedule time to just “be” and put work issues out of your mind, even if for just a short moment.

2. Be in the moment

Say the phrase “Be in the moment” when you find yourself thinking of other things. When playing with your children, enjoying alone time with a significant other, taking a walk, just “be” and relish what you are doing. The more you practice this this week, the more natural it will become in your life.

3. Have fun!

Need I say more:) Being in the moment will take on a life of it’s own. Try to bring fun back into everything you do. The more you balance work and play, the more productive and aware you will be in everything you do.

4. Prioritize

This week focus on prioritizing your time. It is easier to “be in the moment” when you know everything else will get done. Plan your week so you have enough alloted time for work, work related issues, and play. That way you can fully enjoy each of them knowing the rest won’t be pushed aside.

Have a great week!

The National Health Service (NHS) prescribes Magnetic Therapy for the first time!

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

The Sunday Times Newspaper on 26th February 2006, revealed that the NHS has for the very first time allowed magnetic therapy treatment devices to be prescribed by G.P’s. At this moment in time, the devices they are able to prescribe are limited to the treatment of chronic leg ulcers. The magnets, that will be used, will speed up the ulcer’s healing rate and encourage new cell and skin growth.

A UK based clinical study completed in 2003 provided strong evidence that magnetic leg straps were more effective than traditional compression bandaging techniques and have been deemed buy the prescribing authority to be more cost effective.

As yet the NHS has not revealed any plans to widen the prescribing powers of GP’s to allow them to incorporate other magnetic therapy devices into their mainstream treatments, but surely it will not be very long before we see magnetic therapy being used alongside conventional drugs therapies. Magnets have for many years now demonstrated to be equally and in many cases more effective than conventional pain killing drug therapies.

It is blatantly obvious that there are numerous advantages to introducing chemical and drug free options along side existing treatments. Magnetic therapy does not aim to replace existing methods of treatment but simply aims to complement and assist in the reduction of painful symptoms and help speed up the healing process. Due to the fact that magnetic therapy is a non toxic treatment which has no known side effects, magnets seem an attractive alternative to taking potentially harmful medications which have countless side effects. The one big plus side for the NHS is that when compared with the cost of prescription medications magnets have a relatively low cost. Potentially the NHS could save over 100 million pounds a year on prescription painkillers if magnetic therapy was made available to treat a full range of diseases. What will most likely happen is that the Department of Health will watch the new prescription of magnetic therapy for leg ulcers with interest. I expect a further review of magnetic therapy devices by GPs to be made within the next couple of years

Until then the public will have to continue to fork out the bill for magnetic therapy treatments. This may seem unfair, as proven treatments should be widely available. Still pain sufferers can take some solace from that fact that if they use magnetic therapy they could drastically reduce the need for prescription pain killers which will not only improve their health but also take the strain of their pocket, as magnets cost significantly less than a years worth of prescription costs.

The public can also rest assured that magnetic therapy has at long last gained the medical professions approval; something that has been a long time coming. So many clinical studies have previously been rejected and slammed by the British Medical Association, now it seems they are ready to eat their words and admit that they were wrong, it isn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Magnets can help with the scores of medical conditions such as: Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Spodylosis, Fibromyalgia, Back pain, sciatica, diabetes, insomnia, migraine, M.S, stroke, high blood pressure, poor circulation and many more.

Debbie Shimadry is qualified magnetic therapist and pain nurse specialist. She appears on several BBC radio stations as an expert guest on magnetic therapy and is also the managing director of leading magnetic therapycompany worldofmagnets.co.uk To find out how magnetic therapy can help you, visit magnetictherapyfacts.org.

Snoring: A Common Sleep Disorder

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

Sleep consumes as much as one-third or more of the average human’s life. Even if people hope for restful sleep, many types of sleep disorder reduce the quality and quantity of sleep. Snoring is the most common cause of sleep disorder that affects people.

Snoring is divided into two categories: Obstructive sleep apnea and Primary snoring.
Obstructive sleep apnea: Loud, excessive snoring, interrupted by breathing stoppages and gasping for breath. Other symptoms include excessive sleepiness in the daytime and obesity. Also, it was found that is more common in male.

Primary Snoring: is very common and is unrelated to apneic episodes. Primary snoring may be an early predictor for people who will eventually develop obstructive sleep apnea. This progression is more likely in people at ages 35-40 and who undergo a weight gain.

Primary snoring is characterized by loud noises that disturb the sleeper or sleep partners and can be caused by different types of problems: anatomic – if the oropharynx is smaller or more narrow than normal, a deviated nasal septum, hypertrophy of the tonsils and/or adenoids, temporary or permanent enlargement of the nasal turbinate (nasal obstruction), mandibular abnormalities, or tongue enlargement and smoking.

Medical consequences: The obstructive sleep apnea should always be checked by a physician. The fact that you won’t receive the proper amount of air will lead in time to serious diseases. Not enough air means poor blood and brain oxygenation. Even primary snoring can signal other morbid conditions. Nocturnal asthma may be a cause of snoring and snoring may be a trigger for nocturnal asthma. The day time tiredness and sleepiness is only a residual effect of snoring. Snoring often coexists with hypertension, heart disease, asthma and brain ischemia.

Smoking – Cigarette smoking has been demonstrated to be the cause of numerous medical problems, including snoring. The cause is the negative effect of smoking on mucociliary clearance reducing the ciliary mobility, increasing the upper airway blockages and allowing mucus to collect. This effect can even occur through exposure to second-hand smoke.

Nasal Obstruction – a normal breathe through the nose while sleeping will not cause snoring. When a nasal obstruction appears that we must breathe through the mouth, increasing the risk of snoring. Opening the airway passages through the upper respiratory tract is one solution to snoring.

Depending on your snoring pattern, Salin air salinizer could be a real help to prevent and reduce snoring. The fact that the inhaled saline has bactericide, mucokinetic, hydrophilic and anti inflammatory properties leads to reducing inflammation in the mucosa lining the airway passages, opening and widening the airway. Will restore the normal transport of mucus and unclog the blockages absorbing the edema of the nasal mucosa and the oropharynx and the soft palate, causing nasal obstruction and snoring. Widening the airway passage in the nose and the tubes of the sinuses will also improve the sinuses drainage and will reduce snoring.

However, if a person seems to gasp for breath during sleep, the snoring may be caused by obstructive sleep apnea and this is a serious medical condition and he/she should see a doctor.

Thinking now about pets, they are part of our life, day and night, including their problems. A dog snoring pattern is very much the same as ours and looking for a snoring help, a snoring device or a home remedy for snoring dog is not a problem anymore. As your pet could have also asthma or snoring the salinized air will work great also for him.
